Found in a ditch and named after a concentration camp survivor,
Viktor Frankl is the true founder of the Eastern Shore Chicken Sanctuary.
Saved from being dumped in a landfill after
two years in an egg factory, Fanny is the
self-appointed embassador of the sanctuary.
Malcolm (foreground) is a trouble-maker but loves his sister Sonja very much.
Mildred (background) is a placid but headstrong hen who was rescued when a live
poultry market was shut down for health violations.
"Red Emma" was also rescued from the live poultry market. In her energy
and zest for freedom, she resembles her namesake, Emma Goldman
A former fighting cock, Felipe (background) now lives peacefully with the
other birds at the sanctuary. Shown here with one of the "Buckeye Gals,"
Felipe's gentleness and sweetness make him very popular with the hens.
Just eight weeks old here, Alfalfa has already lived longer than most "broiler" hens.
Because she has lived at the sanctuary since she was a chick, getting exercise and
a healthy diet, Alfalfa is smaller than most "broiler" hens her age. Still, by the
time she reaches maturity at six months of age, Alfalfa's genetics will lead her
to have more flesh than her skeleton or internal organs can easily support.
Because she is an especially lively and energetic bird, this will probably cause
her frustration, as her body will not be in synch with her spirit.
Scooter was little and lively like Alfalfa when he came to the sanctuary. Now,
he has to rest frequently and we worry about the possibility of a heart attack.
All we can do is give him a happy life for as long as he is with us.
